Transfer of Internet operational tasks to CITC and Data Services Providers complete!
Persuant to Royal Decree number 229 dated 27/9/2004 regarding the transfer of Internet operation tasks from King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology(KACST) to the Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC) and a number of commercial Data Service Providers (DSPs), CITC has coordinated with KACST and the licensed DSPs to implement a staged transfer of all Internet services with the dual goals of increased performance and improved cost structure for all involved parties. ..
By God's grace, then as a result of the joint-cooperation of all parties involved, smooth transfer of all Internet operation tasks to the commercial DSPs has been successfully achieved. Further, all administrative and legislative tasks and responsibilities related to the national filtering service and the Saudi top level domain ".sa" have been successfully transferred from KACST to the CITC.As part of this migration project, Saudi Telecom Company (STC), the incumbent DSP, has completed the construction of a new national Internet gateway in Riyadh and assumed control of a second in Jeddah. All Internet Service Providers (ISPs) were then migrated from the KACST international Internet gateways to the STC gateways in planned phases involving dual redundant connections to both in order to minimize possible service outages for end users.By God's grace, all connections in Riyadh were fully migrated in September of 2007 and in Jeddah on October 4th 2006. Today, all national commercial ISPs are directly connected to one or more commercial DSP gateways, with all DSPs continually striving to add additional levels of redundant International connectivity and reliability to better serve their customers. The preceding steps are deemed important accomplishments in the drive towards the full commercialization of the ICT sector in KSA and continued development of services provided therein. It is hoped that as the startup challenger DSPs complete the construction of their national infrastructures and come fully online, commercial competition between these DSPs (national Internet gateways) will result in improved prices, services and speed for all, bringing with them improved ICT, and especially Internet, penetration in KSA.Upon this most auspicious occasion, the CITC would like to convey its sincere gratitude to all participating parties who assisted in the planning, implementation or workshops related to this effort. Special thanks go to KACST as well as the commercial DSPs and ISPs.
